News travels fast after gasoline's thrown on the blaze.

Midway through the song, Kane returned to the warehouse. He went to stand with his bandmates to watch Vangard play, a look of consternation on his face quickly giving way to a proud smile.

Although they'd only performed the song a handful of times since recording it, the band sounded well practiced and tight. Nick wrapped up the song while back-to-back with Jody, the last notes of the lead and bass guitars melding perfectly with Logan's electric violins.

Nick moved over toward Amber. "What's up with Dustin?"

Shaking her head, Amber opened a bottle of water and took a swig. "I wish I knew. Saturday night was great. We knocked off rehearsal around seven in the evening. Dustin and I went to dinner and a movie, and then we went back to his place for some of the most rocking sex I've had in ages. All day yesterday, he was in a great mood. After we finished rehearsing last night, we all went around the corner to this cute little 1950s-style diner for a late supper. We were having a terrific time eating all sorts of yummy comfort food—their meatloaf and mashed potatoes are fabulous, by the way—and then while we were looking at the dessert menu, Kane told us that you guys were coming back from Cape Cod first thing this morning instead of late tonight. It was too cute. Kane was so excited about your homecoming."

Amber paused for another quick sip of water. "Dustin's mood, however, took a nosedive. He mumbled something about having to meet some people, threw down a wad of cash for his meal, and took off." She shrugged. "That was the last I saw of him. You know, he's off-the-charts hot and I'd fuck him again in a heartbeat, but the boy obviously has issues."

"I don't get why Dustin cares so much about Kane's love life," Nick said. "Especially since he has one of his own."

Jody grabbed a towel from the edge of the stage and wiped his hands. "I hate to say it, but from what I'm seeing, I suspect drugs."

"Bingo." Tony laid his drumsticks down and joined the rest of the band on the warehouse floor. "I've seen it happen too many times not to recognize the pattern. Self-destructive behavior, wild mood swings, and the telltale meetings with unnamed people."

With a shrug, Jody said, "I hope I'm wrong, but I've seen too many mates travel down the same rocky path. Do you think Kane suspects?"

Logan shrugged. "I don't know."

Before the conversation could continue, Miri and Phil entered the warehouse, loaded down with armfuls of Starbucks bags.

"Come and get it, kids," Miri said.
